The CONNEX Support Unit is committed to applying a comprehensive approach to contract negotiation, seeking to create synergies to the best possible benefit of the countries requesting support. Our goal in this regard is to extend and complement the work of other support providers.
Cooperation is hence a crucial factor for long-term success of our work. We are in constant discussion with international organizations and other support providers. Whenever possible, we form close cooperation with them, based on their experiences and their scope of work.
The International Senior Lawyers Project (ISLP) provides pro bono legal assistance to low-income countries, CSOs and marginalised communities, supporting transparent stakeholder engagement and community-inclusive development.
ISLP’s Natural Resource Management work assists governments in reviewing, analyzing and negotiating contracts with regard to the exploration, development and use of natural resources. Additionally, ISLP helps design and draft legal and regulatory frameworks that encourage fair returns, transparency and accountability, as well as helps to build the capacity of government officials so as to better enable them to implement those frameworks.
For more information please consult the ISLP’s webpage.
The African Legal Support Facility (“ALSF or Facility”) is an international organization hosted by the African Development Bank. It has been supporting African governments in the negotiation of complex commercial transactions since 2010.
It provides assistance to African countries to strengthen their legal expertise and negotiating capacity in debt management and creditor litigation, natural resources and extractive industries management and contracting, investment agreements, and related complex commercial and business transactions.
For more information please consult the ALSF webpage.
The Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment (CCSI), a joint center of Columbia Law School and the Earth Institute at Columbia University, is the only university-based applied research center and forum dedicated to the study, practice and discussion of sustainable international investment.
CCSI set up and manages the Negotiation Support Portal that aims to address the information-sharing and coordination gap. This is achieved by improving the accessibility and visibility of useful tools and resources and technical support available to assist governments in the investment process. The Portal is a core part of the CONNEX Initiative.

The NEPAD Planning and Coordinating Agency (NEPAD Agency) is African Union’s implementation agency that facilitates and coordinates development of continent-wide programmes and projects, mobilises resources and engages global and regional economic communities and countries in implementing priority programmes and projects.
In the context of harnessing African mineral resources for inclusive and sustainable development and in line with the African Mining Vision, the 25th African Union General Assembly requested the NEPAD Agency to support building the technical capacity of Member States to design, negotiate and implement tax policies and complex contracts negotiation in the extractives industries.
Pursuant to the AU request and implemented under its Natural Resource Governance Programme, the NEPAD Agency initiated a series of regional dialogue and capacity development events for mining and fiscal government officials in 2015.
